The Kirby Institute is a world-leading health research institute in the Faculty of Medicine & Health at UNSW Sydney. We work to eliminate infectious diseases, globally. Working across the full spectrum of medical research disciplines, our specialisation is in developing health solutions to reach the most at-risk and marginalised communities and by doing so, building a safer, healthier world for everyone. Our work began in 1986, in response to the emergence of HIV in Australia. Established by the Australian Government as a national HIV research centre, the Kirby Institute has built on its initial world-renowned approach to community-centred HIV research and today, we apply our multi-disciplinary expertise to a range of existing and emerging infectious diseases. Our focus areas include HIV, COVID-19, viral hepatitis, sexually transmissible infections, human papillomavirus (HPV), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and global health. We work collaboratively with a diverse range of partners, including at-risk communities, governments, health care professionals, other research organisations and industry, in Australia and abroad. This results in better-informed research and more effective solutions. The Kirby Institute is comprised of over 300 staff and postgraduate students who work across 13 specialised research programs.
